AEE Lab Experiments Archive
This page has copies of many of the past
and current AEE Lab experiments, along with instructions on how to
install and run the experiments yourself.
All our experiments are developed in Java
- and most have the client (the program running on the participant's
machine) implemented as a Java Applet, launched via the client loading
a webpage. This means that in order to run any of our experiments you
will need the to have the Java Run Time environment installed on both
the experimental server and on all experiment client machines.
Some of
our earlier experiments also require that you have a functional
webserver running on your server (to server out the applet webpage to
the clients). Our later experiments use an embedded webserver (that is
- everything required is built into the experiment server package),
which means you do not need to worry web servers. You simply run
the experiment on a computer, and then point a webbrowser on the client
machines to that server (more detailed instructions are included with
the experiments, but it is a fairly painless process.)
Should you find you need either the Java
runtime, or a webserver
package, we have included both below, along with instructions on how to
install and configure.

Java
Run Time Environment (JRE) 1.5
Most AEELab developed software
uses Java 1.5 (or
later versions.) You will need administrator rights on
the local machine on which you wish to install. If you are unsure if
your client machines already have java installed and correctly
configured, we have included (see right) a link to a test page. If you
conclude you need to install Java, the latest version is always
available from www.java.com - we have also included a link to a copy of
the (now slightly out of data) Java 1.5 run time environment for
Windows.

| Apache Web Server
The following experiments need you
to have a functioning web server on your experiment server machine.
There are a number of packages that can be used, but we use the free
Apache web server. If you wish to use this, we have included
installation instructions and a download link at right:
- All teaching suite experiments
(Posted Offer, Double Auction and OTC)
- MRET Experiment
- Ergon Energy MRET Experiment
To install Apache you will need
administrator rights on
the local machine on which you wish to install.
All
other experiments on this page have an embedded web server built into
them, and do not need Apache.

The
AEELab Remote
Launcher Package (Optional)
The remote launcher package
enables you to issue commands to client machines remotely,
allowing you full control over the running of an experiment session
from a single machine.
When
running
experiments using a roomful of client machines, it is often necessary
to have the machines run a particular program (such as a web-browser or
experiment simulator) simultaneously.
The remote launcher
allows you to achieve this, and it also includes a simple scripting
language allowing you to run very complex environments with a single
key press.
